The Five Solas

The sermon on Sunday was part of a 2-part mini-series, “Recovering the Light of Truth”, connected with the 504th anniversary of the event that many point to as the start of the 16th century Reformation of Christ’s church.
For those new to the topic of the 16th century Reformation, the debated issues are often distilled in summary fashion with “the five solas” (Latin phrases):
- Sola Scriptura – “Scripture
Alone”
Scripture alone is “breathed out by God” (2 Tim 3:16) and, thus, is the final authority on all matters of faith and practice, not contradicting human traditions. - Solus Christus – “Christ
Alone"
We are accepted before God on the basis of Christ’s imputed righteousness alone, not on the basis of merit earned through good works or acts of penance, nor the transfer of merit from deceased “saints”, nor through punishment in Purgatory. - Sola Fide – “Faith
Alone”
We are united to Christ and clothed in His righteousness through faith alone, not through sacraments administered by a Catholic priest. - Sola Gratia – “Grace
Alone”
Salvation is entirely a work of God’s grace, not a result of our efforts, so that no one may boast. - Soli Deo Gloria – “Glory to God
Alone”
God alone receives the glory in our salvation, not us, or Mary, or “saints”, or “holy” priests, or angels.
May the light of truth recovered in the 16th century never be eclipsed again!
Post tenebras lux – "After darkness, light."
Blessings in Christ,
Pastor Evan
