1 Timothy 6:6-21

Bringing the sermon home:

As the letter is drawn to a close, we’re left with two main exhortations: be on guard against the temptation (1) to love and trust in money more than God and (2) to tamper with God’s revealed truth. In short: “guard the deposit entrusted to you”. Just as you expect the bank to protect and grow any deposit you entrust to them, so too God expects you to protect and grow the deposit of truth He has entrusted to you, bearing fruit for His kingdom (Mt 6:33; 13:23).

In these challenging commands we discover the secret to contentment. So long as your life is all about you, you will never be content. It’s only by living for the sake of the One who died for you that you can be set free from discontentment and enjoy a life of peace and purpose (2 Cor 5:15). O church, guard the deposit entrusted to you! Like a pillar holding up the roof of a temple, lift God’s truth on high so that Christ may be glorified (1 Tim 3:15)!

Sermon outline:

  1. You cannot love both God and money. (vv.6-16)
  2. You cannot trust in both God and money. (vv.17-19)
  3. You are not “of God” if you deny His Word. (vv.20-21)
