Bringing the sermon home:

A foundational commitment of every healthy church is the commitment to trust in Christ's righteousness alone for salvation. This was also part of a 2-part mini-series, “Recovering the Light of Truth”, connected with the 504th anniversary of the event that many point to as the start of the 16th century Reformation of Christ’s church.

We primarily focused on Rom 3:19-25; 4:1-8; 4:23-5:2. The question we’re asking is this: on what grounds will anyone be accepted by God?

The answer from Scripture, which was recovered in the Reformation: by Christ alone.

The “trouble” with the gospel being a free gift of grace is that our sinful hearts are prone to want to add more to it, so that our salvation is not merely something we receive by faith, but something that we in some way contribute to. Church history bears out the need to continually challenge our thinking in regard to the fundamentals of the gospel.

Are you in any way trusting in your own righteousness to contribute to your salvation, or are you trusting in the only righteousness that can save: Christ’s alone?

May we never lose sight of the fundamental truths of the gospel by which we now have peace with God!

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord... for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation; He has covered me with the robe of righteousness... as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. (Isaiah 61:10)
