Daily Devotion

God’s “hymnal” begins with these words:

  • Blessed is the man
        who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
    nor stands in the way of sinners,
        nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
    but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
        and
    on his law he meditates day and night.
    He is like a tree
         planted by streams of water
    that yields its fruit in its season,
         and its leaf does not wither.
    In all that he does, he prospers. (Psalm 1:1-3)

Those who flourish spiritually are those who deliberately and diligently cultivate the gospel seed that has taken root in their hearts through careful reflection upon God’s “law” (that is, God’s “torah”, or instruction) “day and night”. One resource that many Christians have found helpful in this regard are magazines that provide a daily Scripture reading and a brief reflection that helps you to meditate upon and apply the Scripture to your life. Such publications are often referred to as “daily devotionals”.

Near the welcome table outside of the sanctuary you’ll find a stack of devotionals. “The Secret Place” is a small quarterly magazine with the current issue covering June, July, and August. “Tabletalk” is the monthly magazine we’re transitioning to, with the current copies beginning in July. In addition to a more substantial daily meditation, this publication provides a handful of additional articles addressing a particular theme each month. Our current order is for 25 copies each month, but if demand is higher, we can definitely enlarge our order!

Regardless of what resources you find helpful, just find an approach that gets you into God’s Word every day. “Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation” (1 Pet 2:2). This is your spiritual sustenance. Without it, your “leaf” will wither and die.

Blessings in Christ,

Pastor Evan
