James 1:13-18
Bringing the sermon home:
This passage continues James’ instructions regarding how to “remain steadfast under trial”. In the preceding verses, James noted that God has a purpose in our trials. The Greek word for "trial" is also the word for "temptation". James now explains that, while it’s true that God allows trials/temptations to refine us, He is in no way tempting us to sin and can never be blamed for our choice to give in to temptation.
Two additional “endurance-principles” emerge, building on the ones from the previous passage:
- Do not be deceived about the nature of temptation, for we alone are to blame when we give in to sin.
- Do not be deceived about the nature of God, for He is a good Father who delights to give good gifts.
Though we are all broken as a result of sin, God is at work to fix what is broken. The answer to our inner distress is not to let our sin define us, but to receive God’s greatest gift: the gift of new birth through faith in the transforming gospel of Jesus Christ.
- Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.
Be not wise in your own eyes;
fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
It will be healing to your flesh
and refreshment to your bones.
