WHAT IS "THE GOSPEL"?

The word “gospel” means “good news”, specifically the good news of what God has done through Jesus to redeem us.

To understand what makes the good news of Jesus so good, we must first understand the bad news about our sin.

Everything begins with God. He created each one of us for a reason. His design is for us to live in a loving, faithful, and worshipful relationship with Him forever.

Sadly, the first man and the first woman rebelled against God’s good design for their lives, rejecting His rule by deciding for themselves what was good and evil.

Each one of us have followed in their footsteps, having sinned against God by living contrary to His good designs.

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. (Romans 3:23)

This is where the news gets really bad: the judgment we rightfully deserve for our sin is what Jesus describes as an “eternal punishment” (Matthew 25:46).

But here’s the unspeakably good news: God the Son became a man, Jesus Christ, to live the life of perfect obedience that we have all failed to live, to die the death that we deserve, in our place, and to rise in victory over sin and death so that all who place their trust in Him for the forgiveness of their sins will likewise rise from the grave to live with Him forever.

For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

HOW TO RESPOND

  1. Confess that, as a sinner, you deserve eternal death.
  2. Confess that Jesus Christ is God the Son, who came in the flesh, died, and was raised from the dead.
  3. Trust in Jesus's substitutionary life, death, and resurrection for the forgiveness of your sins.
  4. Repent by turning from your old life of sin to now live a new life in Christ.
  5. Speak to someone about obeying Christ's command to be baptized.
